As any gardener knows, having soil that is good for the plants or vegetables you want to grow makes all the difference in the world. One of the tools you can use to test the viability of your soil is a soil moisture meter.

As the name implies, the basic function of a soil moisture meter is to test the amount of moisture that is in a section of soil. Different models utilize a variety of technologies to accomplish this end. A radio frequency infrared soil moisture meter, as an example, will use a low frequency radio wave to determine the humidity content of the soil sample. Charts are available to help you determine which vegetables or plants will flourish in the plat of land the soil sample is taken from.

Most types of soil moisture meters operate in conjunction with test tubes that measure anywhere from one to two meters in length. The tubes are inserted into the patch of ground you wish to test. Using a probe attached to the main unit, you can determine such factors as relative humidity, moisture content, and ground temperature.

Data from the soil moisture meter will allow the soil sample to be graded on a moisture chart that ranges from a status of dry all the way up to a classification of saturated. The test is accurate down to what is know as the root level, or the depth that roots for most vegetables would sink.

These days, the moisture meter allow for a video display, so you can actually get a digitized image of the process and the findings. The monitors used to view these images are sometimes the older cathode ray tube technology, while others have state of the art flat panel displays.

In most climates, the conditions of the soil can vary over a short time, which means that it is a good idea to use the soil moisture meter on a recurring basis. This process will help ensure that the soil is kept at the degree of saturation you need for the plant life you are growing in the area. This simple device can help you save a great deal of time, effort and money, not to mention helping you to grow strong healthy plants.
